The many meanings of my art

Meaning is a broad subject that has different connotations to the artist and the viewer.

Creating conversation

But for me there is no difference. The viewer’s and my meanings are connected through seeing and responding to my art. It is the same when two people love the same third person. They are connected and share in something more than just themselves. It allows them to participate in something larger than themselves. It becomes what one might say a meta-meaning. Another significant meaning for me when I create my art is that I want it to be part of a conversation with someone else. It is the book both of us have read and now talk about. Creating conversation, however short, is a significant reason I create.

Exploration of creativity

My artistic journey is also about the exploration of the act of creating something. The space in which creativity happens is a silently spontaneous experience in which the steps taken to get there result in something new. Having creative space also means making time for creativity in my life.

Creating connection

For me, life is a contact sport. Every personal contact, discussion, sale, email, or other form of interaction leaves an imprint on me. It establishes a physical connection to another person that lingers. This is a valuable experience for me and enriches the meaning of my life and art. Hence conversation and even basic communication about my work carries weight.

Example to others

My art is an example to others that one can live a scientifically based career and still be artistic and creative. It shows that even later in life, new things can be learned, practiced, and made competent.

Uniqueness

There is a uniqueness about everyone’s art, and for that matter everyone’s life from which their art derives. That unique creative expression is a moment that can never be replaced or happen again. I believe it is important that those creative acts happen and are needed to extend the richness of life, even if it is just for me the artist. However, sharing one’s work in the broader world and with others extends its opportunity for influence and inspiration.

Creating something tangible

My art is also a chance to create something tangible, that can exist in the hands of others. The importance of this for me cannot be overstated. My art exists outside the realm of computers as only a series of 0’s and 1’s. It exists outside the world of peoples’ ideas, opinions, and morals. It just exists in its own right without having to justify itself. It may mean something different to different people. It can even be meaningless to some. But for me, its simple existence is enough.
