Perception before Awareness series

The emergence of ideas and perceptions from a myriad of sensations is one of the great mysteries of the human body and mind. It arises from impulses that can never be directly known, filtered through layers of organization and sent onward to be rewoven by memory, meaning, and whatever functions are required in a given moment.

This is a fluid, dynamic process, completed through the blending of input from multiple senses and bodily sources—some of which remain unknown or not yet fully understood.

“Emergence” is an apt word to describe this phenomenon. Conceptually, it bears a striking resemblance to images of the cosmos revealed by far-reaching telescopes: vast, layered, and slowly forming from apparent chaos.

Even more striking is that for hundreds of years, individuals with deep introspective capacities—mystics across cultures and religions—have spoken of an inner cosmos.

Rumi wrote, “Do not feel lonely; the entire universe is inside you.”

Thich Nhat Hanh observed, “The whole cosmos has come together to create you. You carry the whole cosmos inside you.”

Meister Eckhart taught that the entire cosmos is created and present within the innermost depths of the soul, a place untouched by time or space.

An African philosophical perspective similarly holds that each person is an integral part of creation, with the vastness of the universe mirrored within.

The Native American leader Crazy Horse is quoted as saying, “I salute the light within your eyes where the whole Universe dwells. For when you are at that center within you, and I am at that center within me, we shall be one.”

It is not surprising, then, that my introspective interpretation of emerging scientific understanding resonates with ancient and perennial wisdom from around the world.

I continue to explore this idea of emergence in my work, and this series will carry that exploration forward.
