Going Off the Res – Taking My Desert Landscape Art to a New Level
My first foray into the art world was photography. I worked hard to make good photographs. But as time went on, I wanted to make my photography into art.
Many people do not consider photography to be “art”, since it is “too realistic” and “anyone can do it with an iPhone”. Most still hold the idea that if a print is not readily identifiable as “reality”, it is not a photograph.
I got tired of hearing that. That’s when I “left the res”, or rather left the reservation of like-minded photographers who still wanted to only make good photographs and not learn the artistic possibilities of photography.
I have always been a landscape photographer at heart and the desert has called me for the last several decades.
Desert landscape art is a genre of art of the American Southwest composed mostly of paintings, sculpture, pottery, and photographs. It consists of typical subjects and elements, like cacti, sand dunes, sandstone, sagebrush, yellow-orange sunsets, mesas, buttes, plateaus, and clouds. There are some great painters and photographers, like Maynard Dixon, Georgia O’Keeffe, Ansel Adams, as well as many others, who have made the American Southwest artistically famous and pushed the horizons of desert landscape art to new expressions.
Thankfully my desert landscape art does not fall into any of those historical categories. All of my inspiration comes from the American Southwest as I wander through little- known areas searching for meaning outside of the commonplace ideas of the desert. I walk the land, shake the sand out of my eyes and boots, and look for the small and insignificant things that are missed by the average person driving rapidly down the interstate and only going to parks and monuments.
I work from memory of my time on the land. My desert is a different desert art and not the typical desert landscape art, but its origin and primary experiences certainly come from the desert.
You may not even recognize it as originating from the desert. But it definitely does.
Purchasing my unique desert landscape art
Thinking about purchasing some of my art for your walls? Well, you are definitely on the right track to pick up one of my photographic prints. I know, you’re probably hesitant, but let’s consider a few things that will help you along this path.
Here are nine reasons why buying my desert landscape art is just the best decision you could make.
Your walls will be happier with my desert landscape art
Your walls need color, depth, and texture. They’re certainly not happy the way they are—blank, off-white (probably very light gray or green if it is a new house or office), and void of any personality. I know lots of walls that are unhappy about being naked.
Adding art creates a visual focal point. That is a very good thing, because your walls really do need that kind of attention.
Think of the serenity in that… a beautiful and unique work of art adorning your walls. It might just provide enough interest that the TV would become jealous!
My desert landscape art and your walls are meant to go together.
My desert landscape art will have your guests starting conversations
Imagine you buy one of my pieces, hang it on your wall, and suddenly you’ve got friends and family asking about it, engaging in deep, meaningful conversations. That is what art is about!
They might even compliment your taste, maybe even admire your sense of style. Blank walls don’t get people talking. They help people… stay silent…and out of meaningful conversations.
My desert landscape art is definitely going to start some of those kinds of meaningful conversations.
Supporting desert landscape artists connects you to a broader creative world and has never been easier
Supporting local or independent artists is a great way to support the creative community. This is much more connecting to the broader human community when you have the work of one person than when you buy those posters at the big box store. My art comes with a connection to me. And that is important to me and you.
Personally produced art is unique and reflects your own uniqueness. That is why it is so important in our homes and work places.
Fortunately, you will never find my desert landscape art in a big box store or in editions of greater than 9. My art is carefully curated by me…personally…and in person.

My desert landscape art definitively is a serious risk for a lifetime of pleasant memories.
Your neighbors will get jealous
Imagine the scene: your neighbors walk in, they see my magnificent work of art on your wall, and they start questioning their own decorating choices.
You’ll be *that* person on the block with great taste, who chose to invest in unique, one-of-a-kind art. That kind of reputation comes with those sideways glances as you walk down the street. You will become a connoisseur!
My desert landscape art is definitely going to come with a step up in your artist appreciation…
It’s definitely way too original
Each of my pieces is crafted with care, often featuring a limited palette of colors, unique compositions, and rich textures.
I left the reservation of common ideas about what should come from a camera a number of years ago. I started altering my prints to be different from a “regular photograph”. I was tired of my prints looking like everyone else’s.
I made alterations here and there and finally, several years ago I started merging multiple images to create “merged exposures”. This is actually a very old photographic technique dating back to the mid-1800’s. What I do differently now is use the currently available software tools to make unique abstractions of my experience in the desert.
Make no mistake! There is no AI in my work or the use of others’ presets.
My desert landscape art is definitely so original that only a few in the world are doing it. As a matter of fact, I discovered the others several years after I started this technique.
You will get questions like “Where Did You Get That?”
Again, imagine buying one of my photographic prints and then having to tell people where you got it. No one wants to admit their blatant unoriginality by mumbling some big box store name under their breath. Chances are this question goes unasked because frankly, we’ve all seen that mass-produced print before. The simple answer is “Go to terrygipson.com and get your own!”
My desert landscape art is definitely going to make these questions easy..
